The 14 Major Stars in a Tử Vi Chart

July 27, 2026 8 min read

What Are the Major Stars?

Among the more than one hundred stars in the Tử Vi system, the 14 major stars are the core group: placed across the 12 palaces by a fixed rule based on birth date and hour. Whichever one lands on the Life palace shapes character the most clearly; the remaining stars only support or interfere, never replacing the major stars' central role.

The 14 Major Stars

The 14 are: Tử Vi, Thiên Cơ, Thái Dương, Vũ Khúc, Thiên Đồng, Liêm Trinh, Thiên Phủ, Thái Âm, Tham Lang, Cự Môn, Thiên Tướng, Thiên Lương, Thất Sát, Phá Quân. Each carries a distinct core quality: some lean toward leadership, some toward intellect and change, some toward principle and discipline, but that quality is a starting point, not a final verdict.

Brightness: As Important as Placement

The same major star lands with a different brightness level depending on which palace it occupies: a 5-step scale from strongest to weakest. A star at its strongest expresses its best qualities; the same star at its weakest shows more of its limitations. Which star it is, is only half the reading; how strong it currently sits is the other half.

Do not just look up a star's name online and paste the description onto yourself: a star's quality must be filtered through its brightness at that palace, and read alongside whichever stars share the palace, before it matches the real chart.

Reading a Major Star in Practice

Knowing which major star sits on the Life palace is not a rigid label. It is a starting point for noticing a natural tendency: one worth leaning into or one worth adjusting, which then carries into how it shows up in other palaces like Career or Wealth.
